FAQ

You Ask - I Answer

Have a question you’d like to ask? I’m committed to giving clients the best care and experience I can. There’s no such thing as a bad question when it comes to mental health. Check out the answers to the FAQs below, and get in touch if you have any additional questions.

This is the also landing page after you have completed your Client Intake Form, and helps to answers possible questions you may have!

How does it work & how long does each therapy session take?

When you have completed the Client Intake Form, I will call you for a quick FREE, no obligation, 15 min consultation chat,  to determine your needs, wants and goals and to make sure we will have a good therapeutic fit.  We then discuss availability and the best time to schedule your first session.

Your first scheduled session should take around 90 mins.   ( If in those first 30 mins we determine there isn't a good fit, we can end the session there,  no obligation and no cost to you - a risk free way to make sure this is right for you )

All future follow up sessions are 60 minutes.

Couples, Groups & Family sessions are charged at an hourly rate.

Coaching Sessions for Individuals: 60 mins sessions

Coaching Sessions for Groups are Min 2 hours sessions

(Note-  Daily rates for coaching and Training for individuals and groups can be provided - POA)

The number of follow up sessions will depend on you, on your commitment, on how you progress and how you feel.  We often see great results from the very first session, and packages of 3 or more sessions may be available at a discounted rate - depending on a plan we discuss.

Many clients report the area we worked on is already clear and free from struggle after no more than 3 sessions, other sessions are then used to target and clear other client identified problem areas, issues or obstacles.

When results are so good in one area, clients often prioritize other areas of their life where they want the same results, whether it is their work, their relationships or another target, I can then tailor a therapy &/or coaching plan to each clients unique set of needs and circumstances.

I like you, want to focus on, and get the results you desire.  Results are long lasting as you build strategies, processes and patterns that can work across many areas of your life & your relationships

What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Clinical Hypnotherapy is where we integrate what you want, with what you actually do, giving you a process where you may have either not had a successful process to use before, or in fact has no real process before.

Where all Hypnosis is a state of relaxed trance with heightened focus and concentration,  Clinical Hypnotherapy  is where a therapeutic process uses the trance state as the vehicle to deliver the therapy and treat various psychological and physiological problems.

The process of helping you as a client, with your reported issues, is to find those things that don't work for you, those things that hold you back and stuck, and then to discover, reveal and utilise your own skilled healthy patterns that work elsewhere in your own life  - and through the session work, allow you to skill up and literally-  reprogram those poor patterns of behaviour that keep you stuck - with new healthy and successful patterns taken from  your own successful and competent patterns.  You get a better version of you based on what you want and need.

Hypnotherapy can help with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, pain management, and phobias, insomnia and sleep disturbances, and even help you Stop Smoking  - and that is just to name a few.

Basically, if you think about it, then we can help to alleviate the suffering right there.

Dr Gérard Sunnen of the New York University School of Medicine reports that hypnosis is...

“the most potent non-pharmacological relaxing agent known to science”. Dr Sunnen advises that he will prescribe hypnosis before prescribing a tranquilliser.
(Source: The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Hypnosis. P4, Alpha Books 2000)

Trance state, which is what is utilised in hypnotherapy, is a common state for most people on a daily basis.  In fact, believe it or not, you can often experience a trance or hypnotic state at least a couple of times a day without ever realising that you’re doing so.

Some most common examples include driving and arriving at a destination without any real conscious memory of the the last few minute of the journey, which many people refer to as being on auto-pilot.  You may also have experience trance when zoning out while binge-watching a movie or  having a fully immersive gaming experience , reading a book, or often when you are working or concentrating on something and find yourself 'in the zone' - in those times, time seems to pass with no real awareness, and that state is where you are 'entranced' - literally in a trance where your attention is fixed for a time.

Trance is truly a human and completely natural state where we can drift in an out of it, without any conscious awareness. The experience of clinical hypnotherapy makes powerful, yet gentle use of this natural trance state to help you make the changes that are important to you.

Much can be achieved rapidly with the use of guided processes during Clinical Hypnotherapy.  Hypnosis with a therapeutic targeted goal,  outcomes we focus on helping you to achieve...

If you wish to do any more research perhaps this will help - According to Division 30 (Psychological Hypnosis) of the American Psychological Association, hypnosis (Also known in Australia - as Hypnotherapy) is defined as:

“A state of consciousness involving focused attention and reduced peripheral awareness characterized by an enhanced capacity for response to suggestion” (Elkins, Barabasz, Council, & Spiegel, 2015, American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis). Many clinicians and researchers in the clinical hypnosis world have embraced this definition:

How does a Video App / Tele-health Sessions work?

Much like any face to face session, a video based session is very private and tailored to you and your needs.

We just use technology to bring the session into the same close therapeutic collaborative arena.

In effect,  we follow a similar process and engage in the same therapeutic processes we would do in a face to face session.

Once we have your completed Client Intake Form, and you have had that quick 15 minute,  FREE, no obligation,  consultative phone chat, we determine your needs, wants and goals and to make sure we will have a good therapeutic fit.

Then if you decide to go ahead, we arrange a session time that suits us both best.

Your first scheduled session should take around 90 mins.

( If in those first 30 mins we determine there isn't a good fit, we can end the session there,  no obligation and no cost to you - a risk free way to make sure this is right for you )

All future follow up sessions are 60 minutes.

Clients report they enjoy the video based session as much as face to face sessions, and in fact many enjoy the fact that these sessions are very powerful, focused and personal and they find themselves making great progress.

Added to this is the simplified or removed concerns such as extra time and effort required for all the logistics of travel and traffic, public transport &/or parking, weather and walking, that often comes with getting to and from appointments - with video based sessions there aren't those issues.

Also, as an added benefit as after our sessions most clients enjoy the sustained feeling of the relaxation and comfort and also of getting continuation of enhanced clarity on their processes which being able to continue with this refreshed uninterrupted focus can help bring.  As being in their own preferred office &/or home environment allows them to continue with those processes for even more pronounced affect post session.

When you arrange for a session time, you decide where you are going to do that session.  Some clients chose their office, their home office, their bedroom, some have even done sessions from their parked car, in their own driveway, as that is their selected quiet space.  So long as you are safe, comfortable and have arranged to not be disturbed during your session,  it can be the right environment for you.

(Tele-health is also known as - Distance Professional Services,  and also known as Telehealth, Teletherapy, E-Counselling, E-Therapy, Online Counselling, and Online Therapy, and Online Conferencing).

    • If you really need something other than what we currently prefer - i.e. Doxy.me / ZOOM / Facetime / WhatsApp -- just let us know - we can try to be as helpful and as flexible as technology will allow

    • (Caveat - not all applications can be used by health professionals due to concerns about compatibility, , security and confidentially so preferred apps may change over time and the type of Apps we used may become limited in their use)

Strategic Psychotherapy - How is this combined with Hypnotherapy?

  • Strategic psychotherapy is a form of brief therapy which directs clients to have a quick and effective resolution to their problem. It is both goal oriented and outcome based.

  • This therapy is directly focusing on assisting clients to identify the distinctions about ‘how’ they run certain behaviours.

  • This ability to determine what may be ineffective or inappropriate patterned responses that people often tend to do - automatically, without thought or choice default to, allows distinctions to change those patterns rapidly and with long lasting results.

  • Clients are able to discover, identify and interrupt and then change  ineffective processes which lead to and maintain their problem patterns/behaviours.

  • Strategic Psychotherapy allows for the learning of new skills and more effective processes, creating better strategies and building a resilience to arm the mind with agility aligned with better processes that lead to better outcomes and more success in all aspects of life.

When Strategic Psychotherapy is used in combination with Clinical Hypnotherapy - the power of the clients own newly rediscovered resources and strength and distinctions (developed via psychoeducational processes used on Psychotherapy)  can enable a client to focus on their strength based processes.

So that when hypnotherapy is then part of the therapy process - the client is able to use this relaxed and focused (Trance) state known as hypnosis to further explore and develop skills that can be utilised, experimented with and practiced in that safe, uncluttered mindful trance state.

Clients report that their ability to have more clarity, greater calmness and focus on their strengths when guided via a trained hypnotherapist gives and enhanced ability to process and utilise these aspects of their underlying skillsets providing a rapid and long-lasting therapeutic outcome . for more information about this - click here:  https://www.sydneyhypno.com.au/strategic-psychotherapy

NLP  -  Neuro Linguistic Programming - How is this combined with Hypnotherapy?

Does this site use Cookies?

  • NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming - is a powerful way of changing someone’s thoughts and behaviors to help achieve desired outcomes for them.

  • It is in essence a form of brief therapy which directs clients to have a quick and effective resolution to their problem. It is also both goal oriented and outcome based.

  • NLP uses perceptual, behavioural, and communication techniques to make it easier for people to change their thoughts and actions.

  • Whilst NLP relies on language processing it should not be confused with natural language processing, which shares the same acronym.

  • NLP is founded on the idea that people operate by internal “maps” of the world that they learn through sensory experiences.  NLP seeks to detect and modify unconscious biases or limitations of an individual’s map of the world.

  • NLP is not hypnotherapy. (although insights discovered can be enhanced when combined with hypnotherapy) , as NLP operates through the conscious use of language to bring about changes in someone’s thoughts and behaviour.

  • For example, a central feature of NLP is the idea that a person is biased towards one sensory system, known as the preferred representational system or PRS.     Therapists can detect this preference through language. Phrases such as “I see your point” may signal a visual PRS. Or “I hear your point” may signal an auditory PRS.  An NLP coach / Trainer / Therapist will identify a person’s PRS and base their therapeutic framework around it. The framework could involve rapport-building, information-gathering, and goal-setting with the client.

  • NLP is a broad field of practice. As such, NLP practitioners use many different techniques that include the following:

    • Anchoring: Turning sensory experiences into triggers for certain emotional states.

    • Rapport: The practitioner tunes into the person by matching their physical behaviours to improve communication and response through empathy.

    • Swish pattern: Changing patterns of behaviour or thought to come to a desired instead of an undesired outcome.

    • Visual/kinaesthetic dissociation (VKD): Trying to remove negative thoughts and feelings associated with a past event.

  • NLP is used as a method of personal development through promoting skills, such as self-reflection, confidence, and communication.

  • NLP can assist people to achieve work-orientated goals, such as improved productivity or job progression.

  • More widely, it has been applied as a therapy for psychological disorders, including phobias, depression, generalized anxiety disorders or GAD, and post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.

  • NLP combined with Psychotherapy & Hypnotherapy allows for the learning of new skills and more effective processes, creating better strategies and building a resilience to arm the mind with agility aligned with better processes that lead to better outcomes and more success in all aspects of life.

When NLP is used in combination with Clinical Hypnotherapy - the power of the clients own newly rediscovered resources and strength and distinctions (developed via psychoeducational processes used on Psychotherapy)  can enable a client to focus on their strength based processes.

What kind of guidelines will underpin the care I/we will receive?
You have the right to Respect, Safety & Information - as per the Code of Ethics/Code of Conduct as prescribed per the following and as per disclosed in your Client Intake Form.

All care provided in adherence to the guidelines and Code of Ethics/Code of Conduct of ISPA, AACHP, GoAH, & the AHA - including but not limited by the following:
AUSTRALIAN CHARTER OF HEALTHCARE RIGHTS  - HUMAN RIGHTS ACT 2004 - MENTAL HEALTH (TREATMENT AND CARE) ACT 1994 - HEALTH RECORDS (PRIVACY AND ACCESS) ACT 1997 - NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES - UNITED NATIONS PRINCIPLES FOR THE PROTECTION OF PERSONS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS AND THE IMPROVEMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH CARE - UNITED NATION CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

SydneyHypno & Kerry Bailey also comply with teh following at all times:

ACT Health Service stakeholder  (Australian Capital Territory - ACT)

After a number of years of consultation in July 2023 the ACT government passed legislation and a regulation (Human Rights Commission Regulation 2023) enacting the Code of Conduct for Health Workers in the ACT.

The Code provides for minimum standards of care in the provision of health services by health workers in the ACT.

This includes

  • Providing safe and ethical care

  • Obtaining consent for treatment

  • Keeping appropriate records & protecting a patients privacy

  • Having appropriate insurance

  • Minimising harm and acting appropriately if something goes wrong

The Code also obliges health workers to NOT

  • Mislead a patient about services, products or qualifications

  • Put a patient at risk due to a physical or mental health concern

  • Make false claims about curing serios illnesses such as cancer

  • Exploit patients financially

  • Discourage patients from seeking other health services or treatments

  • Have an inappropriate relationship or inappropriate boundaries with a patient

Health workers are any person providing a health service who is not a registered practitioner such as a doctor, nurse, dentist or one of the 15 registered practitioner groups regulated by the Australian health practitioner regulation Agency (Ahpra).

This means health workers in the ACT from January 2024 must comply with the Code when providing health services in the ACT.

A health service is a service provided in the ACT to someone (the service user) for any of the following purposes:

                      (a)    assessing, recording, maintaining or improving the physical, mental or emotional health, comfort or wellbeing of the service user;

                     (b)    diagnosing or treating an illness, disability, disorder or condition of the service user.

(This definition is provided for by section 7 of the ACT Human Rights Commission Act 2005.)

This includes massage therapists, laser therapy, counsellors and social workers, dieticians, nutritionists, doula’s, aged care & disability care workers, assistants in nursing and others.

The introduction of the Code aligns the ACT with states that have already introduced the Code including NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia.

From January 2024 patients accessing health services will be able to make a complaint to the ACT Human Rights Commission if the code is not adhered to when a health service is provided.

Information about the Code is available at  https://www.hrc.act.gov.au/health/code-of-conduct-for-health-care-workers

The Code also requires health workers to display the Code where they are  providing a health service.

Copies of the Code can be downloaded from the website or health workers can request copies of the Code by emailing us at HRCintake@act.gov.au.

The Commission generally tries to resolve complaints about health services through a conciliation process.

Where significant conduct issues are identified by a complaint or through other means the Commission can take more significant regulatory action such as placing conditions on a  health workers practice or prohibiting a health worker from providing that service.

If you or your organisation or members provide health services in the ACT, or employ a health worker, you and relevant staff or members need to be familiar with the Code.

If you need further information you can call the Health Services Commissioner’s team on 02 6205 2222 or email us at HRCintake@act.gov.au
