Helping Yourself Helping Others, Stephen Gilligan & Robert Dilts.
In early 2020 Stephen and Robert ran two online workshops for their community as a response to the emerging global COVID pandemic. They were broadcast simultaneously in 8 languages and have been viewed over 10,000 times. During the broadcasts, Stephen and Robert guided the viewers through a group process based on both the COACH state practice and the steps of Generative Change (edited together the process for you to use for self-practice-- to help ourselves-- and to bring these tools out into the world to --helping others).
Feeling stuck – CRASH
A ‘stuck’ state may occur when we meet significant challenges, especially when we are confronting the unfamiliar, dealing with loss or separation, and having a general sense of uncertainty and vulnerability.
He describes the unhelpful survival strategies we can be plunged into – attack, escape or rigidity (fight, flight, freeze) – and how this might result in regression, inertia, ambivalence, the difficulty of letting go, confusion and conflict. Sound familiar?
This ‘stuck state’ can be summarised as collapsing into a CRASH:
Contraction
Reaction
Analysis Paralysis
Separation
Hurt and Hatred

CRASH State (Stuck & Collapsing)
Feeling stuck – CRASH

Feeling resourceful – COACH
Robert feels that in order to progress through change, it is important to cultivate qualities such as flexibility and stability, balance, connection and the ability to let go: being centred, and in your “inner zone of excellence”.
This COACH State can help us move through times of adversity.
Robert Dilts sums up the processes characterizing creating the inner COACH state as:
Centred
Open
Attending with Awareness
Connected
Holding
Applying the model – learn the Techniques
Robert reports that it is important to have practices, processes also called strategies, that help to create and strengthen the COACH state, enabling us to move through and accompany others through times of challenge and change. I completely agree!
All through my SydneyHypno website is information and techniques that you can use, research, practice and in many ways, find useful in maintaining a COACH state.
For example: Presence (including Cantering) and having Rapport.
What new habits might you develop when your life is moving smoothly to help you retain the COACH state (or move out of the CRASH state) during more turbulent times?

COACH stands for Centered, Open, Aware, Connected, and Holding space;
CRASH stands for Contracted, Reactive, Analysis-paralysis, Separating, and Hurt/hateful.
* CRASH states give rise to problems and stuckness,
whereas
* COACH states allow creativity and positive responses.
